The active substance in R&C Shampoo, pyrethrins, effectively eliminates head, body, and pubic lice. The lice are destroyed by absorbing the chemical which attacks the lice nervous system. Humans are not effected in this way. The piperonyl butoxide contained in the treatment makes the pyrethrins more effective in destroying lice. This combination of medicines is known as pediculicide.
This medication is available without prescription, however, since individual conditions may vary, it is important to consult a physician before using pediculicides. See below for more information on cases that require careful attention.
Precautions
As with other medications, you should read the label carefully and completely before using the product. You should consult a physician before using R&C Shampoo if:
1. You have any allergies to the ingredients of the medication. For pediculicide, these allergies include those to pyrethrins, piperonyl butoxide, ragweed, chrysanthemum plants, kerosene and/or other petroleum products. Also notify your physician if you have any allergies to preservatives or dyes.
2. You are or may become pregnant. Pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide may be absorbed through the skin, however, there is no evidence of this causing any birth defects or other problems when used on the skin.
3. Your are breast feeding. The medicine in R&C Shampoo is absorbed through the skin. It is not known if these medicines are able to pass through to the breast milk. Any mother who is currently breast feeding or is considering breast feeding while using this product should consult their physician.
4. Other medical conditions. Current medical problems could be aggravated by this product. You should notify your physician if you have any other medical conditions, especially if you are experiencing severe inflammation of the skin.
Please Note: Children and older adults are not expected to have any adverse reactions not consistent with other age groups, though there have been no extensive studies comparing the effects of this medicine on different age groups.
Usage
Use this medication only as directed. Do not use more of it or for longer than is indicated in the instructions. This may increase amount absorbed by the skin and the risk of side effects. Do not inhale this medication or allow any of it to get into your mouth. This medication is harmful if swallowed or inhaled. For this reason, be sure to apply in a well ventilated area. Keep this medication away from the eyes or other mucous membranes such as the inside of the mouth, nose, or vagina, this may cause irritation. If you do get any in your eyes, flush them immediately with water. This medication should not be applied to eyebrows or eyelashes; please consult your physician if these areas become infected.
1. You should apply enough of the medication to completely wet the hair and scalp (or skin). Wait 10 minutes for medicine to affect the area of infestation. You should then, with a small amount of water, work the shampooed area into a lather then rinse completely and dry with a clean towel.
2. With a nit comb, remove all dead lice and nits from the hair.
3. Immediately wash your hands after the treatment is completed to remove all traces of the medicine.
4. This medicine should be used again in 7-10 days to kill off any newly hatched lice.
Lice are easily passed from one person to another through close bodily contact, or contact with the affected person's belongings such as clothing, bedding, personal care items, etc. Therefore, all members of the household should be inspected for lice and should be treated if an infestation is discovered.
For Pubic Lice - Your sexual partner may need to be treated also since the infestation can easily spread due to close body contact. If your partner is not currently being treated, or if you have any questions or concerns, you should consult a doctor.
Dosage
The dosage will differ for individual patients. Please review the label for proper dosage, or if you have consulted a physician, you should followed their advised dosage carefully.
Storage
Keep out of the reach of children.
Keep it away from heat and direct light.
Do not allow the medicine to freeze.
Do not keep any medicine that is outdated or no longer needed. When discarding the unused medication or empty bottles, be sure to keep materials out the reach of children.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects may include skin irritation after use, skin rash or infection, sudden attacks of sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Other side effects may occur. If other side effects do occur, consult your physician immediately. |
