The active substance in R&C Shampoo, pyrethrins, effectively eliminates head, body, and pubic lice.  The lice are destroyed by absorbing the chemical which attacks the lice nervous system.  Humans are not effected in this way.  The piperonyl butoxide contained in the treatment makes the pyrethrins more effective in destroying lice. This combination of medicines is known as pediculicide.

This medication is available without prescription, however, since individual conditions may vary, it is important to consult a physician before using pediculicides. See below for more information on cases that require careful attention.

Precautions

As with other medications, you should read the label carefully and completely before using the product.  You should consult a physician before using R&C Shampoo if:

1. You have any allergies to the ingredients of the medication.  For pediculicide, these allergies include those to pyrethrins, piperonyl butoxide, ragweed, chrysanthemum plants, kerosene and/or other petroleum products.  Also notify your physician if you have any allergies to preservatives or dyes.

2. You are or may become pregnant.  Pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide may be absorbed through the skin, however, there is no evidence of this causing any birth defects or other problems when used on the skin.

3. Your are breast feeding.  The medicine in R&C Shampoo is absorbed through the skin.  It is not known if these medicines are able to pass through to the breast milk.  Any mother who is currently breast feeding or is considering breast feeding while using this product should consult their physician.

4. Other medical conditions.  Current medical problems could be aggravated by this product.  You should notify your physician if you have any other medical conditions, especially if you are experiencing severe inflammation of the skin.

Please Note: Children and older adults are not expected to have any adverse reactions not consistent with other age groups, though there have been no extensive studies comparing the effects of this medicine on different age groups.

Lice are easily passed from one person to another through close bodily contact, or contact with the affected person's belongings such as clothing, bedding, personal care items, etc.  Therefore, all members of the household should be inspected for lice and should be treated if an infestation is discovered.

For Pubic Lice - Your sexual partner may need to be treated also since the infestation can easily spread due to close body contact.  If your partner is not currently being treated, or if you have any questions or concerns, you should consult a doctor.
